MAA is an organisation aimed at the rescue and rehabilitation of street animals in suburban Mumbai (Kandivali, Borivali and Dahisar). This responsibility is undertaken in network with organisations working in the region for animal welfare along with local volunteers and support staff.
Rescued animals recover at our associate shelters or foster facilities. Once well, they are reunited with their pack in the same location. Some are lucky to find forever shelters or homes.
Every effort to help the animal is a step towards the cause for their ethical treatment. Presently, more than 200 volunteers are working together to serve the voiceless in this suburban area.
How we started
A group of 30 like-minded people with love and compassion for animals to match with, came together in 1998 to provide emergency medical care and services to distressed animals on the streets. They reached to about 50 street animals on an average in a month by giving first aid treatment or Veterinary visits. As the work started picking up, issues such as transport of animals to hospitals and medical centres came into existence. Gradually, the group started attracting new members, making it a KBD AWG (Kandivli Borivli Dahisar Animal Welfare Group). More than 80 new individuals participated in this work and they started providing medical services in their local community. At this forum, more than 100 cases of street animals were managed every month. Resources such as Animal Medical Vans and hospitalisation of animals were mobilised. Primary medical service provider for on-street treatment was recruited.
The load of cases registered increased every day. This created financial crunch in day to day operation. This is when it was realised that formalisation of this group is necessary to mobilise local resources and manage the increasing load of work in animal care and services.
Mumbai Animal Association (MAA) came into existence in April 2016.
